What is a nebulizer

What is a nebulizer and what is its purpose are of interest to many people. Every day more and more new words appear, as a result of which many people simply do not have time to learn from the meaning. In this article we will try to tell in the most concise and understandable form what this device is.

What is a nebulizer
Nebulizer (from Latin “nebula” – fog, cloud) – a device for inhalation, using a slight dispersed spray of the drug. Involved in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, bronchial asthma and respiratory diseases.

It is noteworthy that nebulizers are both stationary and portable. In addition, depending on the method of spraying, they can be compressor or ultrasonic.

Ultrasonic nebulizer
This kind of nebulizer turns the medicine into an aerosol, by means of ultrasonic vibrations. This type is characterized by silent operation and small size, as well as the ability to function with a battery.

The ultrasonic nebulizer is suitable for children because it is easy to use and safe. However, such inhalers are not designed for the use of antibiotics, hormones and expectorants. This is due to the destructive effect of ultrasound on such drugs.

Most often, such nebulizers are used for inhalation with herbal decoctions, essential oils, mineral soda, etc. However, each individual model has its own characteristics, so initially users should carefully study the instructions. The average duration of the procedure with an ultrasonic inhaler is 15 minutes.

Compressor nebulizer
Compressor (jet) nebulizer differs in larger dimensions and weight. However, such a device is more reliable and does not require additional accessories for inhalation. At the same time, the compressor nebulizer can be used with various medicines, which it easily turns into an aerosol.

It is worth noting that these devices are applicable even for babies. Compression inhalers are effective in bronchial asthma, allergic cough and inflammation of the bronchopulmonary system.

How does a nebulizer work
In pharmacies, you can purchase certain drugs intended for nebulizers already in finished form – nebules. A mask or mouthpiece is connected to the outlet valve, after which the inhalation process itself begins, lasting from 5 to 20 minutes.

At this time, the patient should calmly inhale and exhale so as not to cause a coughing fit. The use of a nebulizer by children must be controlled by a doctor, since not all medicines can completely penetrate the respiratory area. Such inhalers should not be used for allergies.

Only a specialist will be able to advise you on the most effective remedies for the treatment of a particular ailment: herbs, essential oils, tinctures, decoctions, hormones, antibiotics, etc. When buying a nebulizer, it is recommended to pay attention to the particle size into which one or another inhaler model will convert drugs.

The time of one inhalation procedure is the period of time during which the liquid is converted into an aerosol and reaches the lungs. On average, a nebulizer processes 5-7 ml of medication at a time. By the way, at the end of the procedure, there is almost always about 1 ml of medication left, which is quite normal.
